Fashion Revolution Month is a response to fast fashion and the systems that have normalised overproduction, short use, and disposal, asking us to look more closely at what we are buying into and what we are throwing away.
This coat began as discarded clothes, including pleated skirts, old trousers, and thread from generations past, none of which were intended to meet, and the process was not about keeping them in their present form, but about understanding how they could sit together without losing their individual qualities.
The smoothness of the trouser fabric, contrasts with the texture of the recycled pleated skirts and the decorative element attracts attention with a slower, more deliberate viewing. The lining, made from fabric leftovers, provides the element of surprise, because there is often more value in these materials than we first recognise when we set them aside.

So that’s why I am here. I’m Tricia Legg, your tutor and I will show you the path I took to create this incredible garment. Yours may be worn to the opera, a wedding, anywhere you want to to be part of a special occasion. I will be with you every step of the way as you work your way through the techniques you need and it all starts with a pile of no longer loved clothes. This is an interactive, course with six LIVE sessions using zoom over 6 weeks so you have plenty of time to work through each stage. They are recorded so you are able to review the lessons and look at them over and over. You will receive one-on-one evaluation during each step and your question will be answered. If you can not keep up the pace, each lesson will be recorded so you can work around your other commitments.
We work in New Zealand dollars. The usual price for the workshop is $NZ199 (approximately $US115, €98, £86) . Participant numbers are strictly limited.
You will need 4-5 different skirts or trousers that are no longer loved or that a memory pieces from a person no longer with you or fabric scraps. You also need to have a commercial coat pattern available to you or the one Tricia used . There will be more details once you register. A sewing machine which can do decorative stitches would also be an advantage.
